If you have never done this before come and give it a go.

MapRun is a free cellphone app that you use on a course to record visits to control points - it uses GPS instead of a physical control-punching technique.

The app is available from Google Play or the App Store. It’s free. Get “MapRun6” which is the newest version. First time of use you’ll have to enter your name and other data.

There will be help at the event so please do come along. There is also info on our website, click the MapRun button on the home page.

Here are some things to do before you leave home to go MapRunning.

Organise a way to carry your phone safely when jogging – eg an armband, or bumbag etc. You will only need to access your phone at the start and finish, as you'll have a paper map supplied at the event.
Charge your phone. It's not thirsty on battery, but it won't do much more than a 3hr rogaine for example.
If you don’t have data on your phone plan, then you can load the event by the following method:
From the apps homepage "Select event", New Zealand, Hawkes Bay. Here you can see a list of available courses you can do anytime by downloading the map from the club website. For this weeks event, scroll down to Pirimai 20210509... and select the one you want to do, there are 5 different ones available. It will automatically download to your phone. When you get to the event on the day you can recall any pre downloaded event without needing data.

Now just collect your paper map and you will then be able to select "go to start" and enter the starting code, sorry no peeking beforehand. You can download all 5 events or just a couple if you want before leaving home.

If you have data you can download the event on site.

And here's what to do when you get to the course

Select the event . Either one you’ve downloaded, or if you have data and coverage you can use the button “events near me”.
Do you usually have sound off, or low? Turn sound up.
When you're ready, tap “Go To Start”. You'll see the map on your phone. Also where you are at the moment, but this only lasts until the start. You can stow your phone now.
When you get near the start control the phone will beep, its as easy as that. Just go off to the next one.
Everything else is automatic – a beep records each control and the finish. The app verifies that you got the controls correctly, and works out the time or score.
If you have data and coverage, your result goes straight to the website.

You can even see other results for the course! If not, use “manual upload” once you're in wifi coverage to get them onto the MapRun website. That’s in a menu indicated by 3 horizontal bars.
